How it works
How to convert audio files on Windows
Three steps, all on your PC. Nothing is uploaded.
-
Open Tools › Video & audio › Convert audio, or drop sound files on the window.
-
Choose the format and, for MP3, M4A, Opus and OGG, the sound quality.
-
Find the converted files next to the originals.
What you get
Built for the real document.
-
Tags kept
Title, artist and album come across, so music apps still sort them.
-
Lossless when you want it
FLAC and WAV keep every detail of the sound.
-
No needless loss
When the sound already suits the new format, it is copied across untouched.
-
Batches at once
Choose or drop a pile of files; each joins the queue.
Your choices
Every choice, before it starts.
The Convert audio dialog, drawn from the app with its defaults selected. The notes say what each choice does.
Convert to
Sound quality
In kbit/s; higher keeps more of the sound. FLAC and WAV have none to choose.
Saved as “song.mp3” next to the original. The original is not changed.
Under the hood
How it decides.
What it reads, what it saves, and the rules it follows, taken from the app itself.
Reads 23 file types
.mp3.m4a.m4b.aac.flac.wav.opus.ogg.oga.wma.aiff.aif.aifc.ape.wv.ac3.eac3.dts.amr.mka.caf.mp2.au
Saves as
- song.mp3
- song (converted).mp3, when an MP3 is saved as MP3 at a new quality
Never over another file, and never over your original.
Copied when it fits
AAC saved as M4A is copied out untouched; anything else is encoded at the quality you choose.
Tags players read
MP3s get ID3v2.3 tags, the version music players read most widely.
Almost any sound file
MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC, WAV, Opus, OGG, WMA, AIFF, APE and more go in.
App or website?
Why not an online converter?
Online tools ask for your file first. Podalls Convert never does.
Good to know
Honest limits.
What this tool does not do, said plainly.
- Cover pictures are not carried over.
- Making a lossy file lossless (MP3 to FLAC) does not bring back detail it lost.
First time? The install guide shows every screen, including the Windows warning.
How do I convert FLAC to MP3?
Open Convert audio, choose the FLAC files, pick MP3 and a quality, and convert. 192 kbit/s suits most listening; 320 keeps the most.
Are song titles and artists kept?
Yes. Titles, artists and albums are kept; MP3s get ID3v2.3 tags, which players read most widely.
How do I convert WAV to MP3?
Open Convert audio, choose the WAV files, pick MP3 and 192 or 320 kbit/s, and convert. The MP3s are a fraction of the size.
